PB's on the Stack and PB's on the course...

Another day and it's time for another stack session, session #5 in the foundation program no less, which featured four sets - 1 with 240g, 1 with 135g, 1 with 100g and finally a set with 195g. The first three sets were 8 reps with full intent (the maximum intent with which you'd swing it on the course), the final set was four reps at max intent (just swing it as fast as you can).

86 was my best on the first set with an 83 average (a PB), set two had two at 94mph with a set average of 93, set three had a 101mph in there, with a set average of 99 and set four had three 90's which was also the average (another PB).

All-in-all that equates to another 1mph gain overall and pushes my distance potential to 262. Now, we must have a quick chat about the distance potential at this point, as this, along with the eSpeed is extrapolated from the Stack Speed.

The extrapolation is due to the Stack being around the length of a hybrid, so some quick maths by the app later and it works out the eSpeed/distance potential based on the shaft length of driver you input. And, seeing as when I started the program I didn't have the shaft for my Cobra driver, I set it at 43.75" to match my mini driver's length. This means if I were to now change the length of shaft it would push all my figures up quite substantially, as I have a 45.5" shaft in the Cobra.

In order to keep things inline with the baseline program I originally undertook and all the figures I've presented so far, I will keep it on the mini driver setting and we'll look at changing it when we do another baseline.

Following the session I thought I'd head out onto the course and play ten holes but, once I got up to hole five, where I'd have to turn down to the bottom end of the course I decided to play on, as I wanted to keep testing myself with the driver. On top of this I have another weapon in my arsenal that I'll talk about in upcoming blogs that is undoubtedly going to help me moving forward and no, it's not another new club 😂

Anyway, the course was playing slightly differently today, as I had a 20mph wind off the left-hand side on the front nine and given I'm now playing a functional fade/cut with the driver, rather than a draw, I drove pretty well, considering you'd expect the ball to have been pushed even further offline. Instead, it seemed to hold the line well and I struggled more with my approach play and trying to hold a draw into it.

Where the round really took off though was on the back nine, as I was only 1+, with birdie looks on 10, 12, 13 and 16 but great short game play, including a chip in on 15 to keep things on a level.

All-in-all nine pars and a bird is pretty good going in cold and windy conditions with no rollout on drives. That said the drives I hit today all pretty much ended up in positions I'd normally expect to be with rollout in summer conditions, once again proving that the Stack is serving its intended purpose.

77 is the lowest I've shot around my home course, so to draw level with that today and know how much more I had in the tank is really promising for the upcoming season.

The journey so far...

Welcome to my blog, a place that I'll use to collect all of my thoughts and explain my golfing journey. So, let's start at the beginning - I'm Matt and I'm a golfaholic BUT whilst I'm hooked this time around (excuse the pun), the same can't be said for when I played golf in my formative years. And, to that end I believe I picked up my first golf club around the age of 7, when my Dad took the family to the driving range so he could practice his own game. I don't remember much about my golf in between then and my teenage years but I do know that I took lessons when I was around 12 and began playing a little too. The problem was, I liked it but I didn't love it. There were other things in my life that I felt deserved my time, including football and school and so I can't say that I ever really gave it my all. I can also confirm that club technology has improved dramatically in the twenty or so years since I last played, which was late in my teens, as bac...

In the ballpark

One of the nice features of the stack app is that it understands you need rest between sessions, with a day off between each session scheduled if you want to stay at a 100% grit score (I always aim to stay at 100% as I want to get as many sessions in as possible). Anyway, I digress, the nice feature is that if you do a speed priming session prior to a round it will then move the session down the line by a further two days, giving your body the reprieve it needs. In my case I did just that ahead of a competition round, in order that I could get loose and limber for the round, especially as I was already a little sore from pushing my body over the previous few days. That said, when it came due for my next session I was playing another competition on that day too. However, with the rest I'd had in between I decided to push on with training before heading out onto the course. I wasn't at my absolute quickest with the 195g, albeit only 1mph short on the average, but I made up for ...

Hanging in there...

Not quite up there with the big ole 97mph that I recorded a few sessions ago but I'm still hanging on in there with the 195g with a 95mph average which equates to 290 yard distance potential. However, once again, perhaps it's not all about that driver equivalent number, rather it's about improving on the other weights too, which is precisely what I did in session 15. There was also a couple of other things to consider for this session too, as I started the day with a migraine, which is never good and when I got to the course, the bay I use was sopping wet, as we've had a lot of rain over the last few days. Anyway, I had my grippier wet weather shoes on so I tried to act like it wasn't going to bother me. Over to the records for the session and the first came with the 65g with the step movement and it was a huge gain on the previous best, which I set in session 12, with a 7mph improvement from 101mph to 107mph. The average has also jumped significantly, with a set ...
