A mixed bag...

No, I'm not talking about the clubs in my bag, I'm talking about the results both on and off the course this week.

Let's start with the stack training, which for one reason or another seems to have stalled out when it comes to the all important max intent swings with the 195g weight. Wednesday's session saw that set average out at 89mph meaning my eSpeed and Distance Potential took a hit as a consequence. However, I did break a new set record on the 125g weight with a 95, besting my 94 that had previously sat as the tide line.

I proceeded to card an 81 with 1 birdie and 4 pars on my next 18 hole round, hitting 58% of the fairways, a measly 22% of greens in regulation, whilst taking 32 putts.

It was a back-to-back day for the next stack session with a round to follow, which I know I said I wasn't going to do this week but, needs must when you're trying to speed train and improve on the course too.

The problem with doing this is I think I don't fully commit to the max swings in set 4 and as a result it was the slowest I've technically been since I started training. However, that's not to say I was slow across the board, as I set a new record on the 105g twice in the same set, first with a 95 and then a 98 (previous best was 94). So, I still think there's progress, even if the needle hasn't moved on the headline number for a number of sessions now.

As for the round that followed, it was another steady outing with another chip in (on #3), another birdie (on #4) and six pars. Odd that I felt like I putt well in this round too considering I had 3x 3 putts, which is high for me, but still only 31 putts total.

Reflecting on the stack sessions this week I'd like to point out that whilst the results in those sessions might not be showing up in the numbers, they are in my play. I'm further off the tee at the moment than I have been since the summer, without the advantage of the run out we'd get in those conditions, which bodes well for not only now but also the season ahead.

I also put this card forward as a general play card, as whilst I could easily turn up to some of the competitions over the next few months and win, I don't want to be known as a bandit, after all I'm improving and I want my handicap to reflect that progress.

As you'll see from the lead image on this post, that means I'm now down to 13.4 from 14 and heading in the right direction towards single figures...

Inch-by-inch, we're moving forward, let's keep going!

The journey so far...

Welcome to my blog, a place that I'll use to collect all of my thoughts and explain my golfing journey. So, let's start at the beginning - I'm Matt and I'm a golfaholic BUT whilst I'm hooked this time around (excuse the pun), the same can't be said for when I played golf in my formative years. And, to that end I believe I picked up my first golf club around the age of 7, when my Dad took the family to the driving range so he could practice his own game. I don't remember much about my golf in between then and my teenage years but I do know that I took lessons when I was around 12 and began playing a little too. The problem was, I liked it but I didn't love it. There were other things in my life that I felt deserved my time, including football and school and so I can't say that I ever really gave it my all. I can also confirm that club technology has improved dramatically in the twenty or so years since I last played, which was late in my teens, as bac...

Phasing Out

The last session in phase 3 was pretty successful with previous records continuing to be toppled, with a new high speed of 104mph on the 135g (previous fastest - 101mph), which also led to a jump from 98mph to 102mph as the set record. This was followed up by another 4mph jump from 107mph to 111mph on the 65g, which facilitated the set record jump from 106mph to 109mph. Then, on the 240g I eeked out another 1mph to take the set record to 93mph. It was all the 97's for the final set on the 195g, giving an eSpeed of 106mph and distance potential of 297 yards. The routine will change again as I enter phase 4 of the program but I doubt it'll be too far from where we are now and I'm looking forward to digging in and getting quicker still.

Full Speed Spectrum

Here we go then, onto the second stack program in my search for more speed and as I mentioned in the previous post, I have moved onto the full speed spectrum program. I'm going to cover something going forward too, as it might seem like my speed has suddenly jumped up and that's because it has. However, there's a reason for this - driver shaft length. During the course of the foundation program I had the stack system set at my mini driver length, as that's what was in the bag when I started the program. I can't remember exactly when but at a fairly early stage in the program I got hold of a stiff Fujikura Ventus shaft for the limited colourway Cobra XB head I'd had for some time, meaning the shaft length between the two was 43.75 for the Original One mini driver and 45.5 for the Cobra. This has a bearing on the calculations used to estimate eSpeed and distance potential in the stack app, so I decided to stick with the mini for that program. However, I've s...
