Phase 3

The latest stack session was the first in phase 3 of the foundation program, which sees me having to swing at max intent (swinging as quickly as possible, not an on course swing) for all four sets.

The first set was with 280g on the stack and boy could I tell that it was only just shy of being on the max weight setting (300g). My max during that set was 83mph and I averaged 81mph which I don’t think was too bad to be honest.

Next up we had two sets at 75g with a max of 104mph and average of 101 in the second set, followed by a max 106mph and 103mph average in set three.

Finally it was back onto the 195g weight for the final set with four swings at max intent. This set is what’s used to calculate the stack, eSpeed and distance potentials and I managed a new PB of 95mph and a set average of 93mph, which was also a PB and results in another 1mph gain overall.

That now puts me at 14mph gained with a distance potential gain of 42 yards!

I’ve said it before but it’s worth mentioning again that I’m longer off the tee since using the stack all whilst having a 46% ball in fairway stat. It’s clear to see that the stack has raised my ceiling and will continue to do so, especially as we’re still in winter conditions, meaning roll out in the spring/summer is only going to make me even longer off the tee.

After finishing up with the stack training I decided to head out onto the course, with the expectation of just doing the ten hole loop. However, I obviously decided that swinging out of my boots 28 times wasn't enough and I needed some cardio too, as once I got to hole five I decided to push on. I'd also done these first five holes at a pace that a speed golfer might be proud of and kept that pace for as long as I could, with hole 11 being where I started to wane a little bit.

As you can see from the lead image, the sun was setting as I finished out on the eighteenth and I actually sat and watched it drop below the horizon as I sat counting up my score for the round. To my surprise (although I knew I'd had nothing on there too damaging) I'd managed another sub 80 round, collecting a birdie and 7 pars along the way.

The journey so far...

Welcome to my blog, a place that I'll use to collect all of my thoughts and explain my golfing journey. So, let's start at the beginning - I'm Matt and I'm a golfaholic BUT whilst I'm hooked this time around (excuse the pun), the same can't be said for when I played golf in my formative years. And, to that end I believe I picked up my first golf club around the age of 7, when my Dad took the family to the driving range so he could practice his own game. I don't remember much about my golf in between then and my teenage years but I do know that I took lessons when I was around 12 and began playing a little too. The problem was, I liked it but I didn't love it. There were other things in my life that I felt deserved my time, including football and school and so I can't say that I ever really gave it my all. I can also confirm that club technology has improved dramatically in the twenty or so years since I last played, which was late in my teens, as bac...

Stacking and golfing

Yesterday I opted to pair my stack training with a round of golf, with the stack session done before heading out for 18. Now, this is something I'm probably going to have to evaluate that going forward as it does put my body under a lot of stress heading into the round, meaning I'll likely do it the other way around next time out to see the cause and effect. In terms of the stack session it was another good one and another where I found another 1mph, taking me up to 12mph overall in the first six sessions of the foundation program. I know I'm moving the needle too as I feel like I'm stretching various muscles in my body I'd never previously considered as a factor. The great thing about the stack app is the motivation it provides during the session too as you look to swing harder and faster with every backswing and follow through. The notification and auditory message you receive when beating a record, such as the set record, shown in the bottom left, just makes you ...

Still more to come...

Last session in the full speed spectrum program was a bit of a disappointment if I'm being honest, as I was pretty far from my best and should have completed it the following day, rather than after a round of golf. However, what it does prove, in my opinion, is that even when I'm not 'on it' I'm still considerably faster than I used to be and that results in me being able to get it out there that bit further. As you can see in the program summary, my peak eSpeed was set in session 23 at 109mph with a distance potential of 303 yards achieved, whilst my quickest swing also came during that set, with a 110mph and 307 yard potential. A few days later I completed the progress check and once again I wasn't at full tilt but still close to my potential with a 96mph Stack / 105mph eSpeed which equates to 292mph. A couple of things worth noting are that I completed the driver swing during that session with the mini driver, not my actual driver, so there's going to b...
